Henrietta's House: Week 2
Goudge's Inspiration, Illustrations, Learning to Laugh & Foxgloves!
“Few books can it be said that they appeal to all ages, but 'Henrietta's House' is one of them, for it provides that atmosphere of enchantment which leaves the reader, old or young, in the same whimsical and happy mood…”
🌿 Hodder & Stoughton, 1942
When did Goudge write this children’s book?
When Henrietta’s House came out, Goudge had just finished writing The Castle on the Hill, her World War II novel. She was two years away from publishing Green Dolphin Country; four years away from publishing her beloved fairytale, The Little White Horse; and six years from creating the cozy scenes in Pilgrim’s Inn (The Herb of Grace).
This week we will look at Goudge’s inspiration for Henrietta’s House, the illustrations from the 1942 edition, the goodness of laughing at yourself, and magical foxgloves. Glad you can join us!
