I mentioned last week that Goudge wrote many dozens of Christmas stories, so I thought it would be nice to introduce a few lesser known ones this month!
Short stories
After the success of her first novels—Island Magic, The Middle Window & A City of Bells—Goudge was advised by her agent to write some short stories so that she could earn some money while also working on her longer novels. When she had finished her novella, Sister of the Angels, she had The Bird in the Tree, the first of her Eliot books, already on her desk. Then in 1941 while she was working on The Castle on the Hill, her third short story collection was on its way to the press…
