“A book begins with falling in love. You lose your heart to a place, a house, an avenue of trees, or with a character who walks in and takes sudden and complete possession of you. Imagination glows, and there is the seed of your book.”

Join us!
I hope you are planning on joining us in June for a different kind of read-along: one with Goudge’s very own words from her heart!
The Joy of the Snow is a treasure to those of who love Goudge’s writing. Goudge wrote her autobiography after some prodding from her fans and her publisher. She was hesitant to write it, but I am so glad that she did as it gives us another view into her life and the way she processed it. Hope you can join us!
“The only people who will read this book are the people who read my stories and they have so often written to ask me, when did you begin to write?
What is it like to write a book? Are writers inspired?
Does it flow out of them like water from a tap or do they slog?
Do they enjoy their work?
Do they put themselves into their books?
How long do writers have to be at it before they can earn a living?
Do you mind what the critics say?
Have there been other writers in your family?
There have been other questions but these are the main ones and I will try to answer them… but lack of time means that we do not answer them as fully as we should like to do…
(I) will try to make amends now. I began to write as a child in the Principal's House at Wells and have scarcely left off since.”

Get your copy
You can get it from Girls Gone By Publishers and be sure to grab a copy of our July book, The Valley of Song, as well to save on shipping!
(If possible, I would encourage you to buy books straight from Girls Gone By Publishers as having Goudge’s books in print is a chance for many newer readers to get a reasonably priced copy at last! I do not get commission from them in any way, but I know that their investment in new editions has been a relief for so many readers as Goudge has steadily risen back to popularity causing her used copies to be hard to find.)
The next best deal to GGBP is to order it from Blackwells, but you can also get it from Amazon or look for a vintage copy or paperback on Ebay or Abebooks.
Hope you can join us for all the Goudge novels and children’s books still coming up in 2025:
Love to hear if you will be reading with us in June, and if you will be reading for the first time, or rereading!
