“The moment she woke up Henrietta was conscious that she was happy, unusually, deliciously happy… She had three causes for it; the first snow of the year was lying thick and white over the world, it was a month to Christmas, and today her father was coming on a long visit…”

Contining Goudge’s Coziest Series
How can December be just over a week away? And how can Christmas be only a month away? Do you have a long visit coming from anyone you love this month?
In December we will be reading together Sister of the Angels, Elizabeth Goudge‘s second book of her three-book Torminster series, which is based on the cathedral city where she was born, Wells, in the West Country of the UK.
Join us in December!
I hope you are planning on joining us for a short, festive and cozy Goudge—Sister of the Angels. Goudge wrote this novel as inspired by the scenery and soul of a magical cathedral city that contains a street built in the 14th century, a Bishop’s Palace surrounded by a moat, and swans that ring a bell for their food. Inside this safe haven of an old and venerable faith community, the whole Fordyce family will be ready to celebrate a glorious Christmas in the Vicar’s Close and the Cathedral.
We read A City of Bells in November, and now will read its sequel, Sister of the Angels, in December as our Christmas book—but you may read one without the other!
If you missed A City of Bells, just jump in with Henrietta at Tower House (Goudge’s birthplace) and enjoy a festive Christmas book! We will finish the last book of the series, Henrietta’s House, in February 2025.
I will be sharing setting photos, book quotes, characters and scenes all month here in posts, and we will enjoy discussing it together live on Zoom the on Wednesday, December 18th at 3PM EST. Hope you can join us!
Get your copy
You can get your paperback book, Sister of the Angels from Amazon.
Find the two Henrietta books, Sister of the Angels and Henrietta’s House, for the best price from their small publisher, Girls Gone By Publishers. (They have very reasonable shipping prices, though it will take longer to the US. It would be a good idea to order soon so that you can join us in December & February.)
We have had a wonderful line-up of Goudge books in our 2024 list, and I will soon be announcing the new list for 2025:
“ ‘Only a month to Christmas!’ sang Henrietta. ‘Only a month!’
And she shot out of bed, for she still had so much to do. Grandmother’s cross-stitch tea-cosy was only just begun, the silk tie she was going to knit for her father wasn’t even started and she didn’t know what she was going to make for Grandfather and Hugh Anthony…”
