I am so pleased to be here with you all this year and excited to read this selection of books. I have read ‘The Eliot Chronicles’ previously and am finding it is a very rich experience to read them again more thoughtfully. I loved ‘The Deans Watch’ which I read a few months ago, before you read it together here. Most of the books on this year’s list are new to me, except ‘Green Dolphin Country’ and ‘City of Bells’. I am so looking forward to all these books.
So glad you are here, Joy! So many wonderful books ahead of you then!! The Scent of Water is an experience, as is The Little White Horse. Looking forward to digging in :)
There are quite a few on the list that I haven’t read yet. So this is very exciting for me. Although as soon as I finish reading a Goudge book, I instantly feel like I want to flip back to the first page and start it all over again. I’m particularly looking forward to The White Horse, The Rosemary Tree and The White Witch.
Thank you for providing this space for us, a year of sharing Elizabeth Goudge’s books with you all is a hopeful and inspiring start to the year ahead.
I'm so happy to have recently found this bookclub and to see the reading list for this year! Four on the list I haven't read yet : "God so loved the world", "The Rosemary tree", "The white witch" and "Sister of the angels". Some of the others I read many years ago and so will be looking forward to reacquainting myself with them. Happy new year from Melbourne, Australia!
So glad you can join us Kathy! I've been hoping this year would have some of everyone's favorites. I am excited for you to read those new ones! Treasure in those for sure. As well as the older favorites of course. <3
I don’t really know where to put this comment but I’m super excited! This morning my granddaughter and I went to a charity shop. I was introduced to the novels of O. Douglas, the pen name of Anna Buchan. She was John Buchan’s sister. Beautiful, evocative writing set in Scotland. Lovely characters and as you would expect, lots of literary references. I found a 1947 vintage edition of Penny Plain for $3AUS!!! Plus some other gems for me. I love the joy when this occurs. I had to share with my Bookclub friends.
How exciting! I have not heard of her before, but will definitely look her up! And vintage books for a few dollars is always an exciting find :) What a lovely morning. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for all the thought and care you put into the read-alongs! I’ve been focusing on some needed healing and not able to do all the books, so repeats are fine with me 🤭
What a great list! I own them all thanks to some purchases last year for my Year of Goudge. I did own God So Loved The World but lost it in a house move, I don’t know how. I have time to search out a copy. I’m sorry that I’ve not been writing much in response to your recent Substack posts but I’m in full Grandma mode and have very little spare time. In a week I will be able to concentrate and read again. However, I’m enjoying delightful picture books. Happy New Year!
That sounds like a marvelous week - enjoy!!! This will always be here later, which is the nice things about an online bookclub I think :) Since we just read The Dean's Watch, I think this list includes almost all of my favorites... except for Gentian Hill, and The Valley of Song... and... ;)
It’s actually going to be a fortnight by the time it’s up. The favourites thing is an issue, isn’t it? We really can only have one favourite…but I become deeply immersed in every Goudge novel.
Yay! I'm looking forward to the five I haven't yet read: The Heart of the Family, The Rosemary Tree, Towers in the Mist, Island Magic, and Green Dolphin Country! 🥳❤️

She has a way of making each one my current favorite for sure. 📖❤️
